Campo San Lio

Campo San Lio is a public square in Venice’s Castello district, near the Rialto Bridge and Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo. The Church of San Lio faces the square, while Salizada San Lio connects it with Rialto and Piazza San Marco. People still gather here, following the Venetian tradition of campi as centres of everyday life.

The church began in the ninth century under the Badoer family and became a single-nave building after its 1783 redesign. Its interior brings together Titian’s Saint James the Major, Giandomenico Tiepolo’s Angels and Virtues, and Jacopo Palma il Giovane’s altarpiece. The Gussoni chapel contains sculptures by Pietro and Tullio Lombardo, alongside a 2015 triptych by Sylke von Gaza. Canaletto was baptised and buried here, adding a personal thread to the building’s artistic history.

Giovanni Mansueti’s painting of the 1474 Holy Cross miracle preserves a view of the square’s late-medieval setting. The scene shows a reliquary becoming too heavy to carry across the church threshold during a funeral. That detail links the pavement outside with Venice’s religious history and its changing architecture.
