Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato

The Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato stands on Murano, an island in the northern Venetian Lagoon. Dark red-brown brick, a separate bell tower, and a canal-facing colonnaded apse shape the small square. Origins reach back to the seventh century, with major reconstructions in the ninth century and 1040.

Inside, three naves rest on Greek marble columns brought from Altino, combining Romanesque forms with Byzantine decoration. A twelfth-century mosaic pavement covers more than 500 square metres, using porphyry, serpentine, geometric patterns, and animal figures. The eastern apse follows a polygonal plan with rows of rounded arches, while a plain gold semi-dome frames the standing Virgin Mary.

Saint Donatus’s relics rest in a marble sarcophagus, linking the church to Murano’s medieval religious history. Four rib bones hang behind the altar, each longer than one metre and traditionally associated with a dragon slain in Greece. Their size creates the most striking detail inside, although they may belong to large extinct Pleistocene mammals.
