Knisja ta' Santa Barbara
Knisja ta' Santa Barbara is a small Baroque church in Malta, with a calm, symmetrical façade shaped from warm Maltese limestone. Completed in 1739, it reflects Valletta’s growth during the eighteenth century.
The church served as the spiritual home of the confraternity of bombardiers, whose members worked with cannons and faced dangerous duties. Inside, sacred paintings and symbols honour Saint Barbara, while carefully cut stonework preserves the building’s quiet character. Its modest scale made room for prayer, fellowship and refuge rather than grand display.
Nearly three centuries later, the façade still carries the marks of its makers. Inside, the stillness recalls the prayers of bombardiers before they returned to their posts.
