Il-Knisja ta' San Ġakbu

In Malta, Il-Knisja ta' San Ġakbu presents a Roman Baroque facade shaped by carefully carved stone. Mediterranean sunlight sharpens the restrained details across its surface. Romano Carapecchia designed the church as his first project on the island. Its architecture favours measured forms and contrasts between stone, light, and shadow.

The church served as the conventual home of knights from Portugal, Castile, and León. On Saint James’s feast day, the Grand Master and dignitaries joined solemn processions through the surrounding streets. Inside, an elliptical cupola draws your gaze upward above an altar of dramatic scale. Filippo Paladino’s painting of Saint James gives the altar its devotional focus. Beneath the image, a niche holds the Madonna of Soledad, brought from Spain by a Spanish knight. Centuries of priestly care, ceremony, and silent prayer remain attached to these carved walls.
