Karabijnschietbaan I-III Fort De Bilt

Karabijnschietbaan I-III Fort De Bilt forms part of Fort De Bilt, a military site in Utrecht with layered architectural history. Fort De Bilt began as an earthen fortress with bastions facing the city. A reduit provided an inner refuge for defenders. Its defensive landscape used trees, shrubs, alder wood and hawthorn hedges to conceal the fort and strengthen its boundaries. The Biltsestraatweg connected Utrecht with Arnhem. Later construction added stone barracks, shelters, storage magazines and a bombproof guardhouse. The northern grounds became a training area for soldiers. Karabijnschietbaan I-III marks the former carbine ranges, which served military exercises and later police training. Concrete casemates defended the fort and road. During the German occupation, a machine gun bunker became a prison, while the fort witnessed executions remembered by a memorial. The site carries educational meaning through its memorial and history. Its architecture brings together earthworks, concrete bunkers, military training spaces and traces of Utrecht’s wartime past.
