Cennet Efendi Türbesi
Cennet Efendi Türbesi stands in the Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi neighbourhood of Üsküdar, on Istanbul’s Asian side. The historic mausoleum brings architecture and Ottoman religious history into the district’s streets.
Cennet Muhammed Efendi built the original structure as a devoted follower of the Sufi mystic Aziz Mahmut Hüdai. He died in 1665 and was buried here, establishing the site’s central memorial. A fire in the 1800s damaged the building, which Rabia Adviye Hanım rebuilt from wood in 1870. Sheikh Osman Şems Efendi composed the substantial inscription placed above the entrance. Another fire destroyed the walls in 1961, before restoration returned the structure to its original form in 2012.
Several sarcophagi remain inside, including those of Cennet Muhammed Efendi, his wife and his caliph. Rabia Adviye Hanım and her sons also rest beneath the wooden structure.
