Schloss Maurach
Schloss Maurach stands directly on the lakeshore below the church of Birnau, with pale façades and simple lines. Trees, open lawns, roofs and chimneys frame the compact building against the lake.
The property began as a Salem monastery estate, first mentioned in the twelfth century alongside nearby vineyards. Farming and wine production shaped the land, while boats used the waterfront as a landing place for lake crossings. In the early eighteenth century, Abbot Stephan I Jung rebuilt the former farmstead as a small residence. Salem’s abbots then used the lakeside building as a summer retreat.
After secularisation, the property became part of the Salem domain and later passed to Wettingen‑Mehrerau Abbey. It now serves as a leased conference house and remains closed to general visitors. The clearest detail is its setting: a quiet, light-coloured residence beneath Birnau, opening straight towards the water.
