Tygelsjö kyrka
Tygelsjö kyrka stands in a Swedish village, with the harbour and sea to the west and the town to the north. Its restrained Gothic revival design serves a parish setting, while stained glass casts coloured light across the worn Victorian floor.
Built in 1903 and 1904, the church was consecrated in 1905 by Bishop Billing. Kjårke Pittersen gave the building a sturdy form that replaced an earlier medieval church. A stave church once stood nearby during the first millennium, followed by a stone church from the late twelfth century. The older site gained a tower in the fourteenth century and transepts in the nineteenth. Its altar, pulpit and baptismal font now remain inside the newer building.
Children’s choirs, youth gospel singers and an adult choir bring voices into the space. Sunday worship, weekday morning communion, baptisms, playgroups and local meetings connect the church with village life. East of the chancel, a slight hollow marks where the medieval tower once stood, fifteen metres from the present building.
