In Italy, Chiesa di Santa Barbara Vergine e Martire stands as a parish church with a Neo-Gothic façade, vertical lines, and substantial stonework. Three parallel naves shape the interior beneath the building’s strong vertical emphasis.
Inside the old citadel, a chapel occupied this site during the sixteenth century, linking worship to the former fortress. The nineteenth-century fortress was dismantled during the middle of that century. Demolition also removed the earlier church, so Pietro Carrera directed a replacement between 1867 and 1869. Carrera chose a clear Neo-Gothic design for the replacement. That rebuilding enlarged the sacred space into three naves while preserving the site’s parish purpose.
The roofline and stonework retain the nineteenth-century character. A fortress chapel, a demolished church, and a living parish follow one another here.
