Chiesa di San Gioacchino
Chiesa di San Gioacchino stands in Italy as a nineteenth-century church shaped by eclectic taste. Its composed façade combines vertical emphasis with ornaments drawn from several historic vocabularies.
Carlo Ceppi designed the building, which took shape during the second half of the nineteenth century. The church suffered severe damage during air raids on 8 December 1942 and 13 July 1943. Its interiors and roofs were devastated, while the central ceiling collapsed above the area where people had sought shelter. After the war, partial rebuilding restored its parish function and preserved visible traces of the destruction.
Photographs retain details of the façade and bell tower for local study. Look closely at those architectural elements, where Ceppi’s original design meets the marks left by wartime damage.
