Chiesa del Santo Sudario
Chiesa del Santo Sudario stands as a confraternity church devoted to the Holy Shroud in Italy. Its narrow façade gives little hint of the richly decorated interior.
Devotion here began with a confraternity founded in 1598. In 1728, Vittorio Amedeo II donated land for a hospital serving mentally ill people, and a chapel followed between 1734 and 1764. The church reopened in 1821 after suppression in 1801. Angelo Reycent then completed part of its redecoration.
Inside, one nave gathers Piedmontese Rococo stucco, gilding and colour around Antonio Michele Milocco’s Transfiguration. His hand also appears in the high altarpiece. The crypt houses the Museo della Sindone, linking worship above with the Shroud’s wider history.
Conservation uncovered a stucco Shroud bas-relief above the tympanum. Confraternity rites still take place beneath Milocco’s painted vault.
