Chiesa dei Santi Martiri stands in Italy behind a restrained façade, enclosing one broad nave. Pellegrino Tibaldi shaped the interior for the relics of Solutore, Avventore and Ottavio, the city’s ancient protectors.
Construction began in 1577, and the relics entered ceremonially on 10 January 1584. Marble columns frame the lateral chapels, which open into the nave like theatrical stage sets. Andrea Pozzo added fresco decoration in the late seventeenth century, while Luigi Vacca repainted sections between 1842 and 1844. Carlo Giulio Quadro enlarged the presbytery and raised the dome and bell tower between 1708 and 1724. In 1730, Filippo Juvarra’s monumental high altar received a gilt-bronze urn containing the relics.
Bernardo Antonio Vittone gave the façade its later appearance in 1768. Air raids in 1942 and 1943 damaged the roof, walls and glass, leaving partial repairs by 1944. Inside, surviving frescoes, the gilt-bronze urn and the single nave keep several centuries visible together.
