Rebekka Sakolsky født Shotland is commemorated in Norway by a Stolperstein set flush with the pavement. Small brass catches light against the grey paving. The ten-by-ten-centimetre square stands at a threshold, where ordinary footsteps meet a name from history.
Artist Gunter Demnig began this street-level memorial project in 1993, placing plaques before buildings connected with people persecuted under Nazi rule. Here, the inscription preserves both names. The birth name keeps family ties and personal identity visible within a memorial intended for daily public space.
In Norway, a Jewish museum stewards the project and keeps such names within the streetscape. The lettering is simple and direct. Tiny marks remain on the brass from people who have stopped beside the pavement.
