Unity of Italy Square

Piazza Unità d'Italia is a sea-front square in Italy, enclosed by grand palaces and an open horizon. Its broad paving creates an expansive setting for cafés, public gatherings and views across the water. The Palazzo del Municipio anchors the scene with an eclectic nineteenth-century façade and an elegant ground-floor portico. Nearby, a former shipping-company headquarters and a palace housing regional offices and the prefecture complete the architectural frame.

The site began with a small chapel and an open area occupying roughly half its present extent. During the nineteenth century, the space took its modern shape and gained its current name after the city's annexation in 1918. A restoration around the millennium renewed the paving and façades, while contemporary lighting changed the evening atmosphere. The square also witnessed major public moments, including the arrival of the destroyer Audace and crowds welcoming national troops.

At night, blue light spreads across parts of the paving beside the illuminated façades. That colour recalls a former small dock where boats once found shelter.
