Teatro Marittimo
Teatro Marittimo stands within Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, Italy, as a circular Roman retreat from the second century AD. Water surrounds its central artificial island, while a barrel-vaulted portico creates a secluded ring supported by forty Ionic columns.
Emperor Hadrian used this miniature villa for reflection and relaxation. Its interior follows a Roman domus plan, with an atrium, courtyard, portico and thermal bath, while cipollino and pavonazzetto marble add colour to the architecture. Marine motifs appear on the marble friezes, and the columns combine smooth and fluted shafts.
Restoration between 2014 and 2016 repaired structural problems and returned the site to visitors in 2017. The island, moat and enclosing colonnade still give this private imperial retreat its striking maritime character.
