Casa Armatei

Casa Armatei stands in Timișoara as one of the city’s oldest surviving buildings. Its late Baroque façade features Corinthian pilasters with doubled edges and a rounded northeast corner shaped by Rococo design. Four wings form a rectangular plan around a central courtyard, while the building’s position apart from neighbouring structures gives the courtyard light and space. Construction began in 1744 and ended in 1775, replacing an earlier house from the Ottoman period.

The building first served as a military casino, where officers gathered for dinners, social occasions and formal celebrations. Its upper-floor ballroom hosted officer balls and became part of Timișoara’s wider social life. Additional floors arrived in 1910, followed by changes to kitchens, dining rooms and sanitary facilities. Restoration work now addresses the façade, the main pavilion, original wooden joinery, and marble and wooden floors. The ballroom is also being carefully renewed, while a terrace above the former summer garden adds another historic event space. The rounded corner remains the clearest detail to look for from the street.
