Vogelinsel Max-Eyth-See
The Vogelinsel Max-Eyth-See is a European bird sanctuary on the northwestern side of Stuttgart’s artificial Max-Eyth-See. Water surrounds a refuge of roughly three hectares.
Between Mühlhausen and Hofen, the island preserves dense banks and stands of alder, ash, and willow. Visitors cannot enter the island for recreational activities.
It remains Baden-Württemberg’s only regular breeding site for the night heron, a central conservation focus. Other bird species also use the protected shoreline.
Conservation measures maintain nesting trees, shoreline vegetation, and food including amphibians, small fish, and small mammals. The lake’s landscape records a former gravel pit beside the Neckar.
Walking paths circle the recreational lake, while much of the sanctuary shoreline stays closed to public access. Several restaurants also stand around Max-Eyth-See.
From the paths, you can observe the island’s changing woodland and birdlife without entering its protected habitat. The Max-Eyth-See tram stop provides nearby public transport access.
