Theater der Altstadt
Theater der Altstadt stands on Rotebühlstraße in Stuttgart, inside a former cinema building known as Feuerseekino. It is a professional private theatre in Baden-Württemberg. At the entrance, a plaster bust of Arthur Schopenhauer provides a distinctive visible landmark.
Klaus and Elisabeth Heydenreich founded the theatre in 1958, beginning in a wooden building on Brennerstraße. A fire destroyed that first home in July 1969. Performances resumed within thirty-six hours with Wolfgang Bauer’s Magic Afternoon, followed days later by Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. Charlottenplatz’s subway underpass became its next home in 1970.
Since the move to Rotebühlstraße in 1998, the programme has brought together contemporary works, classics, readings, musical evenings, and productions for young audiences. Michael Frayn’s Noises Off opened that venue. Christof Küster leads the theatre from the 2024–25 season, while Der Trafikant recalls former ensemble member Robert Seethaler.
