Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde am Löwentor

The Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde am Löwentor in Stuttgart presents paleontology and geology through fossils from southwestern Germany. It belongs to the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart.

Its permanent exhibition follows Baden-Württemberg’s geological history from the Triassic through the Jurassic to the Quaternary ice age. Original fossil finds anchor this journey through the region’s deep past.

Among the displays, the skull of Homo steinheimensis gives the prehistoric past a distinctive human focus. The Amber Cabinet preserves smaller stories in fossilised resin.

Life-sized dioramas place prehistoric creatures beside fossils within the museum’s spacious exhibition hall. The museum stands near Stuttgart’s Rosenstein Park.

Designed by Siegel, Wonneberg and Partner, the complex links exhibition rooms, research facilities, workshops and administration around a courtyard. An underground passage joins the two museum buildings.

The collection began with the natural holdings of the Dukes of Württemberg and later developed through geological, paleontological and mineralogical research. Educational programmes include guided tours, projects, excursions, holiday activities and family tours.

Outside, Bernhard Luginbühl’s Dinosaur Sculpture combines shipyard steel with casts of ammonites, bones and snail shells. Wheelchair users can access the museum’s public spaces.
