St. Johannes Maria Vianney
St. Johannes Maria Vianney is a Catholic church in Stuttgart’s Mönchfeld district, set within a car-free, green neighbourhood. Its two-storey cubic form uses a dark clinker facade, while a central square connects the church with homes and community facilities.
Consecrated in summer 2023, the building replaced a 1960s church that had become too large for the congregation. White plaster walls, a stepped wooden ceiling and dark end-grain flooring create a bright interior with 110 seats. A glass cross on the south-west facade filters daylight into a luminous altar cross, linking the exterior architecture with the worship space.
Three residential towers around the church contain 64 senior-friendly apartments, a four-group kindergarten and a Caritas outpatient-care station. Underfloor heating and barrier-free bathrooms support accessible living, while a Marian statue and crucifix preserve elements from the former church. Beneath a glass floor in the foyer, the new foundation stone appears alongside parts of the old one.
