Neue Kanzlei

Neue Kanzlei stands on Königstraße in Stuttgart as a neoclassical government building with four sections around a courtyard. Retail shops occupy the ground floor, connecting the architecture with the city street. Parts of Baden-Württemberg’s Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports use the building. The historic Stiftskeller is accessible to the public through the Maute-Benger store.

Construction began in 1551 under Chancellor Volland, but the first floor remained unfinished after his death. Duke Christoph completed the structure in 1578. Early seventeenth-century rooms later accommodated silk production, while the cellar changed from wine storage to a registry. The present building rose between 1833 and 1838, designed by Gottlob Georg Barth and Adam Friedrich Groß. Wartime damage left visible consequences before restoration took place between 1947 and 1950. A protected-monument status now preserves its architectural layers, from the sixteenth-century Stockgebäude to the nineteenth-century façade. The courtyard brings those different periods together behind one of Stuttgart’s best-known historic streets.
