Gate of Hope
Gate of Hope is a sculpture in Stuttgart, standing at the end of the Lodzer Steg between Rosenstein Park and Leibfriedscher Garden. Dan Graham created the triangular structure for the International Garden Exhibition in 1993, using stainless-steel profiles and one-way mirrors.
A large triangular opening faces the path, while a smaller cut-out opens towards Leibfriedscher Garden. Grid-mounted mirrors shift between opaque, translucent and transparent as the light changes, overlapping reflections with views through the structure. A concrete base holds a 45-centimetre-deep water basin beneath a grid floor, while the modified tetrahedron recalls an unrealised covered-bridge project in Brittany.
The sculpture joined Stuttgart’s exhibition art stations and remains in place, turning a route between two parks into a changing field of reflections.
