Grande Mosquée de Strasbourg

The Grande Mosquée de Strasbourg stands beside the river, where a broad dome and smooth columns open the building toward the sky. Paolo Portoghesi designed this contemporary mosque for Strasbourg.

The building brings natural light into its great hall and connects Islamic tradition with open architectural curves. Its riverside setting gives the architecture a clear symbol. The mosque serves as a place of worship, while its wider role includes cultural, social, and educational activities. Classes and Quran recitation classes take place here. Open days and Ramadan gatherings bring people together around shared meals, stories, faith, and community life. Friday sermons are held in Arabic and French.

The great hall receives daylight by day, while the structure appears to glow from within at dusk. Light changes the building’s presence across the day. Under the dome, the mosque presents community, dialogue, and openness through its form and uses. Its curves frame a place where worship, learning, and cultural exchange meet beside Strasbourg’s river.
