Raffles House
Raffles House is a single-storey building on Fort Canning Hill in Singapore, surrounded by the historic landscape of Fort Canning Park. Brick walls and tiled surfaces give the present structure a clear architectural character, while indoor and outdoor spaces host events and functions.
The first house stood here in 1822 as a wooden, thatched residence for Sir Stamford Raffles and his wife Sophie. George Drumgoole Coleman designed the early building, which Raffles praised for its views and climate before leaving Singapore in 1824. The British Government later acquired it, renamed it Government House, and rebuilt it in neoclassical brick and tile for colonial governors. Demolition followed in 1858, making way for Fort Canning, and the modernised version rose in 2003.
From the hill, the former Government House looked across the settlement around the Singapore River and appeared in many paintings of Singapore.
