Lim Bo Seng Memorial
The Lim Bo Seng Memorial stands in Esplanade Park, Singapore, as a war memorial dedicated to resistance leader Lim Bo Seng. Its white marble structure forms an octagonal, pagoda-like shape. Architect Ng Keng Siang combined traditional Chinese motifs with modern materials in the memorial’s formal design. A three-tier bronze roof crowns the structure.
Bronze lions guard the memorial, while plaques record Lim Bo Seng’s life in English, Chinese, Tamil and Jawi. The inscriptions use Singapore’s four official languages. Lim Bo Seng was born in Fujian, China, and later moved to Singapore. Before the war, he built a career as a businessman and became a leader in anti-Japanese activities.
Lim Bo Seng organised resistance activities during the Japanese occupation and served with Force 136, a secret service unit. His wartime work ended after capture, torture and death. The memorial honours his sacrifice and places his story within Singapore’s wartime history. Its setting in Esplanade Park connects the monument with a broader group of nationally significant historic structures.
