Monumento a la Virgen del Rocío

Monumento a la Virgen del Rocío stands in a small cul-de-sac opening onto Calle San Jacinto, in Seville’s Triana district. Modern buildings surround the plaza, which developed during the nineteenth century from a communal courtyard known as a corral. Francisco Maireles Vela created the limestone figure, presenting the Virgin with a bronze crown and radiating halo. A triumphal-style column raises her above a brick pedestal, while an iron fence separates the sculpture from the surrounding space.

The work commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Círculo Cultural Rociero de Triana, which donated it to the neighbourhood. Its form replicates the coronation monument in Almonte, linking Triana with the shrine and the Romería del Rocío pilgrimage. A ceramic plaque records the dedication, while the original wrought-iron lanterns have since disappeared. After the sculpture fell and injured a young person in 2002, restoration returned the limestone and bronze structure to its place. Look closely at the pedestal, where the plaque and layered materials preserve a very tangible connection to Triana’s Rocío traditions.
