Monumento a Juan Pablo II
Monumento a Juan Pablo II stands in Seville’s Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, beside the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede. The bronze figure faces the Archbishop’s Palace from a limestone and yellow marble pedestal. Four orange trees surround the monument, while the open arrangement lets you walk around it and view every side.
Seville created this tribute after Pope John Paul II visited the city in 1982 and 1993. Local supporters formed the Asociación Promonumento a Juan Pablo II in 2005, and sculptor Juan Manuel Miñarro completed the design in 2006. The statue later stood at Centro Cajasol before reaching its permanent setting near the cathedral. A public ceremony inaugurated the work in 2012, shortly before the traditional Virgen de los Reyes festivities.
The papal figure measures 2.45 metres and wears a pallium and chasuble. Its pedestal rises about 1.80 metres, reaches 1.10 metres at its widest point, and carries a commemorative plaque. A presentation bust eventually remained in the Vatican after it was given to Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.
