Mercado de Abastos Puerta de la Carne
Mercado de Abastos Puerta de la Carne stands in Seville as a market inside a public building with Andalusian heritage status. You see a former railway station whose classical façade uses semicircular arches, pilasters, and balustrades.
The building opened in 1902 as San Bernardo station, also called Estación de Cádiz, on the Sevilla-Cádiz railway line. Trains once connected Seville with Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera, Málaga, and Granada, while the wider complex held workshops, coal bunkers, water tanks, and railway dormitories. Passenger services ended in 1991, and the market moved into the building in 1999 after the railway site changed use.
One detail reveals the scale of that earlier world: a locomotive turntable measured fourteen metres across. Today, market activity occupies a place shaped by railway travel, urban change, and everyday life in Seville.
