Esfera conmemorativa de la Primera Vuelta al Mundo stands in Seville at the old Muelle de las Mulas, beside the Guadalquivir. Its corten-steel armillary sphere presents interlocking rings that evoke the celestial world and the expedition’s global route. Installed in 2010, it marks the five-hundredth anniversary of the first circumnavigation of Earth. Seville formed both the departure point and the destination for that extraordinary voyage.
Five ships left in August 1519, seeking a commercial route to the Spice Islands, now Indonesia’s Moluccas. Ferdinand Magellan led the expedition first. After his death in the Philippines, Juan Sebastián Elcano commanded the return through the Indian Ocean and around the Cape of Good Hope. The Victoria alone reached Seville in September 1522, carrying seventeen survivors up the Guadalquivir. Their arrival brought cannon salutes, a silent crowd and a procession to Seville Cathedral the following day. The voyage transformed navigation and provided empirical evidence of Earth’s spherical shape. Around the sphere, the steel rings preserve that connection between Seville’s riverfront and the first complete journey around the planet.
