Porta San Giuseppe
Porta San Giuseppe stands in La Pigna, Sanremo’s old town, as a surviving gateway through the city’s former defensive walls. Sixteenth-century masonry once connected the castle with other gates, protecting closely packed houses, narrow lanes, and arched passages from pirate raids and attacks.
The surrounding fortifications grew between the early fourteenth and mid-sixteenth centuries as threats continued along the coast. Nearby, underground springs filled the vasche delle mura di San Giuseppe, which irrigated gardens and orchards beyond the western walls. A public lavatoio also served residents, bringing washing and social life beside the defensive works.
Look for the remaining wall sections that trace the old boundary around the gate. Nearby Bastione della Ciapéla once guarded Sanremo’s only drinking-water source.
