Palazzo Borea d'Olmo

Palazzo Borea d'Olmo rises in Sanremo as a major civic palace in western Liguria. Its late-medieval core supports the palace’s Baroque appearance. The Borea d'Olmo family shaped the building's history through civic service, diplomacy, administration, and local leadership. Large marble portals frame the palace’s main entrance. Original wooden doors carry iron reinforcement, while marble statues depict the Virgin and Child and Saint John the Baptist. The statues are attributed to Fra’ Giovanni Angelo da Montorsoli. Inside, a Genoese atrium brings together marble columns, balustrades, a short staircase, and vaulted ceilings. A grand staircase leads to the upper apartments. The palace also contains chapels, richly decorated rooms, a gallery with mirrors, busts, paintings, and a Van Dyck Crucifixion. A preserved bedroom recalls the stay of Pope Pius VII. Its ceiling shows dancing angels above the historic room. Historic guests included queens, kings, artists, and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. War and an earthquake once damaged the building. Its surviving architecture joins Renaissance details, Baroque decoration, family memory, and Sanremo’s civic history in one urban landmark.
