Spitalhof Courtyard

Spitalhof, also known as Reutlinger Spitalhof, brings together several chapters of public life within one historic courtyard. Its gateway carries a medieval pillory image beneath the roof cornice.

The arch also displays a sixteenth-century coat of arms created by Hans Motz, adding a precise historical marker. The complex began as a hospital by the early thirteenth century.

During the Middle Ages, religious and civic institutions connected this site with care for sick people. Later, it housed older members of the civic upper class.

A town fire severely damaged Spitalhof, yet the complex retained a public and social role. Its hospital church hosted democratic delegates from Württemberg and Baden.

During the twentieth century, Spitalhof became an adult education centre, linking the complex with learning and cultural participation. Adults used the site for further education.

The courtyard also hosts cultural events, including open-air cinema with a large screen and varied films. Its programme includes familiar and less-known productions.

These changing functions connect medical care, old age, political debate, adult learning, and shared culture. Spitalhof preserves each chapter within one public setting.
