Ice Tower and City Wall Houses
Ice Tower and City Wall Houses form a quiet corner beside the lively old town, where a tower stands tightly against small houses. The tower is one of the few surviving Zwinger towers from the medieval city wall. Underground passages once connected such towers, allowing movement through the fortifications without crossing open ground.
After the city wall was demolished, the tower changed purpose. From 1877 to 1906, it served as the town’s ice cellar, storing ice inside its defensive structure. During the same period, residents built small houses against the former wall, bringing domestic life into a space once designed for defence.
