Mariä Himmelfahrt

Mariä Himmelfahrt is the oldest building in Sallern, with Romanesque walls shaped by over eight centuries of worship. Its rounded windows mark the church’s Romanesque beginnings.

The late-fourteenth-century Gothic choir adds a ribbed vault that draws attention towards the altar. A small twelfth-century side tower carries a distinctive Baroque onion dome. Inside, late Gothic frescoes survive beside a Baroque Marian figure. A ceiling painting presents Mary’s Coronation above the layered interior.

The church became a pilgrimage destination in the eighteenth century, centred on a revered, grace-giving image of Mary. The Feast of the Assumption brought pilgrims to this place of Marian devotion. The cemetery preserves a medieval rubble-stone wall and an early-fifteenth-century light column with reliefs. An iron cross from 1904 marks the graves. Together, the church and cemetery record changing forms of faith through stone, fresco, sculpture, and metal.
