Xhamia e Gazi Mehmed Pashës
Xhamia e Gazi Mehmed Pashës stands in Prizren’s Bajrakli neighbourhood as an Ottoman mosque and one of Kosovo’s oldest monuments. Its stone courtyard, minaret, and surrounding buildings create a compact picture of religious and civic life. Built by Gazi Mehmed Pasha between 1571 and 1574, the mosque formed part of a larger complex with educational, charitable, and religious buildings.
The complex included a medrese, lecture hall, hamam, library, and türbe. Today, the medrese houses the Museum of the League of Prizren, while the lecture hall serves as the House of the League. Around 200 Ottoman manuscripts remain in the library, written in Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman Turkish. A rare handwritten Qur’an there dates from 1312 in the Islamic calendar. Religious and festive days still bring a flag to the minaret.
On 10 June 1878, the League of Prizren held its first assembly here, commemorated by a 2007 plaque. Eight courtyard fountains have supplied water continuously since construction. Until the late twentieth century, an independent water system supplied all Prizren whenever the public network failed. Restored in the early 1990s, the ensemble still brings worship, education, and Albanian history together. A nearby türbe built for Gazi Mehmed Pasha recalls a commander who died in battle in Hungary in 1596.
