Nauener Tor
Nauener Tor stands in Potsdam, Germany, as one of the city’s three preserved gates. Built in 1755, it presents a medieval Gothic appearance beside a lively square near the Dutch Quarter.
Johann Gottfried Büring designed the gate from a sketch by Frederick II, creating Continental Europe’s first example of English Gothic Revival influence. A city wall once connected it with Jägertor and the small Brandenburg Gate, while a promenade now links the historic landmarks. Restoration in 1996 and 1997 returned its original colour, and cafés, restaurants, and bars keep the surrounding meeting place active.
Tram tracks pass directly through the gate, placing an eighteenth-century monument within Potsdam’s modern transport network.
