Construction began on 6 October 1842, when the city’s closed stock exchange had left local traders meeting outdoors. The association created rooms for business discussions, meetings, receptions, and commercial events, while also representing Porto’s merchants and supporting trade. Different architects and craftsmen contributed over several years, combining practical spaces with decorative details that reflected the city’s commercial ambitions.
Inside, halls and rooms connected negotiations with civic ceremony, linking Porto’s trading traditions to its changing business life. The first stone, laid on that October day in 1842, marks the moment when merchants began shaping a permanent home for commerce.
