Museo della Carta
Museo della Carta occupies a former paper mill in Valle dei Mulini, the Valley of the Mills, within Amalfi’s inner city. Restored machinery fills the space, showing how local craftspeople once made paper by hand.
Nicola Milano established the museum in 1969, drawing on his family’s connection to Amalfi paper, also called bambagina. Working equipment demonstrates each traditional stage, while photographs, documentary prints, and historical documents trace paper-making across the region and its maritime-republic past. A specialist library gathers books on production techniques and preserves knowledge of the craft.
During a demonstration, you can watch a sheet of Amalfi paper take shape before you. The valley once held water-powered mills that helped make Amalfi a centre of paper production.
