NSG Heisterholz
NSG Heisterholz lies southwest of Petershagen-Kernstadt in North Rhine-Westphalia, within a forest belt reaching toward the Schaumburger Wald. The nature reserve covers about 403 hectares of sandy woodland. Old oak forests dominate the landscape, alongside birch-oak and hornbeam-oak stands. Natural springs, stream valleys and swamps add changing habitats across the forest.
The surrounding Heisterholz extends across about 880 hectares, while an approximately 467-hectare section carries Flora-Fauna-Habitat status. These habitats shelter the middle spotted woodpecker, black woodpecker and great crested newt. Nordholz and Kohbrink border the reserve near major roads and other protected areas. Hiking routes lead through a landscape recognised as important for North Rhine-Westphalia’s biotope network.
The forest also preserves a link to Petershagen’s industrial past through the former Heisterholz clayworks. Bricks and roof tiles came from that industry, including mosaic flooring made for the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Today, sandy soils, old trees and wet hollows create close-up encounters with plants, birds and amphibians.
