Marianne Block
Marianne Block is a Stolperstein in the pavement of Petershagen, Germany, commemorating Therese Jacob. The wheelchair-accessible memorial connects a local street with the history of the Jewish community and the Holocaust.
Therese Jacob was born in Petershagen in 1889 and later moved to Freienohl, where her daughter Margot was born in 1925. After Albrecht Jacob died from First World War injuries, mother and daughter returned to Petershagen. Nazi authorities deported them to Riga in December 1941, after confiscating their home, belongings and money. Therese died from malnutrition in the Riga Ghetto in April 1942.
Margot survived separation from her mother, imprisonment at Stutthof and the war, then returned to Petershagen. She married Kurt Scheurenberg, who had also been imprisoned at Stutthof, and they raised four children. Her story remains especially striking because she was the only Jewish person from Petershagen known to return alive after the war.
