Muzeu i Pejës

Muzeu i Pejës stands in Pejë inside Konaku i Tahir Beut, an eighteenth-century traditional guesthouse. The building once welcomed travelling merchants and other travellers. Two permanent exhibitions present the Dukagjini Plain through clothing, textiles, jewellery, tools, weapons, household objects, and musical instruments. Traditional crafts shape the museum’s ethnological display. It includes Rugova wedding clothing, embroidered garments, symbolic amulets, and the woollen, bell-shaped skirt called xhubleta. The xhubleta carries motifs linked to ancient Illyrian culture. Archaeological rooms bring together stone tools, bronze coins, ceramic fragments, oil lamps, stelae, cippi, votive altars, and historical documents. These objects represent prehistoric, Illyrian-Dardanian, Byzantine, Slavic, and Ottoman periods. A marble funerary stele from ancient Gradina features carved portraits and decorative motifs among the collection’s notable pieces. Founded in 1971, the institution preserves Pejë’s cultural heritage through collections and educational activities. Its programmes engage people of all ages.
