Walking Street
Walking Street is a narrow pedestrian nightlife strip in Thailand, lined with neon signs, video screens, bars and clubs. Live bands, DJs and crowds fill the open air, while shopfronts press closely along the road. At one end, a pier offers quieter space and ferries to nearby islands.
The stretch began as a local fishing road during the 1960s and 1970s. Later, foreign soldiers on rest and recuperation helped turn it into an entertainment strip with cabarets and discotheques. Traffic closures after road accidents in the 1990s left pedestrians and nightlife at its centre. Adult entertainment remains prominent, alongside staged muay thai shows opposite Marine Plaza. Those performances favour theatre over professional competition, and visitors may sometimes enter the ring for photographs.
A band beneath a neon arch contrasts with the quieter light falling across the pier. Crowded areas require awareness because pickpockets operate there, while drugs remain illegal and touts can lead to scams.
