Église Saint-Leu - Saint-Gilles
Église Saint-Leu - Saint-Gilles stands in Paris’s 1st arrondissement, where narrow streets partly hide its two high exterior towers. Inside, a single Gothic nave opens beneath numerous stained-glass windows. The 1611 choir brings Renaissance and Gothic elements together, while 15th-century alabaster sculptures show scenes from Christ’s life.
A small chapel dedicated to Saint Gilles stood here in the 12th century, and major alterations followed in 1319, 1611, 1727 and 1780. The French Revolution closed and damaged the church. Restoration followed under Napoleon Bonaparte, while the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre helped bring Saint Helena’s relics here in 1819. A crypt built in 1780 displays those relics.
The main organ predates 1603 and has undergone several modifications. Nineteenth-century stained glass was restored after damage during the Paris Commune. The Trinitarian Order serves the local community, with particular attention to homeless people in the Les Halles neighbourhood.
