Plaça Major

Plaça Major is a rectangular square in central Palma, Mallorca, surrounded by three- and four-storey buildings. Ground-floor porticoes create covered walkways around the open space, where markets, street performances, and everyday gatherings take place.

The square occupies the former site of the San Felipe Neri convent and neighbouring houses. Until 1823, the Inquisition’s headquarters stood here before demolition made way for redevelopment. Construction began about ten years later, and the first wing reached completion in 1838. Later work added underground parking and commercial galleries beneath the square. Four streets branch from here: San Miguel, Jaime II, Colón, and Sindicato, linking the historic centre with Palma’s wider streets.

Look towards Plaza del Marqués del Palmer to find El Águila beside Can Rey. Their early twentieth-century metal structures and colourful La Roqueta ceramics show Catalan modernism in Palma. San Miguel church and the Principal Theatre stand nearby, while Santa Eulalia church and the city hall lie within a short walk.
