Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad

The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad stands in Oaxaca City as a church dedicated to the Virgin of Solitude. Inside, her image shows clasped hands, expressing contemplation and quiet strength during difficult times. Her likeness also appears in Oaxacan homes, altars, murals, city niches, and even carved radishes during local festivals.

A local story says a mule carried the Virgin’s image to Oaxaca, then refused to continue. A sculpture behind the basilica preserves that story for visitors to see. Throughout December, processions, church bells, brass bands, fireworks, and cultural performances fill the surrounding streets. Devotees gather for outdoor masses, while food stalls, carnival rides, clothing, sweets, savoury snacks, and religious items crowd the steps and street below.

Throughout the year, people light candles, pray, give thanks for health and life, and touch the mantle with flowers or traditional herbs. During major celebrations, pilgrims spend the night in the atrium as music continues around them. The basilica brings faith and community into view through a memorable mix of candlelight, street food, bells, and fireworks.
