St. Peter und Paul
St. Peter und Paul stands in Hopferstadt, a district of Ochsenfurt in Bavaria, as a Catholic parish church shaped by Gothic architecture. Its Echter tower carries Gothic tracery friezes thought to date around 1400.
Origins reach back possibly to around 1050, when the Counts of Comburg-Rothenburg established a church later given to Neumünster Foundation in Würzburg. A parish church already existed in the village by 1245. Military conflict damaged the building in 1416, while Lorenz von Bibra and Albrecht von Bibra rebuilt the choir in 1505. The nave was rebuilt by 1864, followed by neo-Gothic furnishings from Franz Hofmann in 1892 and 1893, then a redesign in 2006 and 2007. A 1689 baptismal font now serves as a holy water basin.
The choir brings together a 1850 painting of the sinking Peter, statues of Peter and Paul, and three Franconian apostles. Three keystones show Peter, a beaver and a rose beneath the ribbed vault. The church also preserves a stone sacrament house from around 1500, a Madonna from around 1760 and an eternal light from around 1780. Its organ has 29 stops, two manuals and electric action, continuing a musical history reaching back to 1695. Four steel bells, acquired in 1921, complete the soundscape of this pilgrimage stop.
