Benito Juárez was born in San Pablo Guelatao and came from a Zapotec background. He worked as a lawyer and politician before serving several times as Mexico’s president between 1857 and 1872. His reforms, known as La Reforma, sought to separate church and state while strengthening civil rights. Foreign intervention and civil war shaped the difficult political world in which he governed.
The site recalls his commitment to justice, equality and the rule of law. Juárez’s famous words, “Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace,” remain closely linked with his legacy.
