Estatua de Benito Pablo Juárez García stands in Oaxaca City as a public sculpture portraying Benito Juárez, a Zapotec leader. Its figure recalls a local man who became governor of Oaxaca and president of Mexico.
Miguel Noreña created the sculpture, while engineer Francisco González Cosío designed its pedestal. Oaxaca City unveiled it before the government palace on 16 September 1885, during music and public celebrations. The work became the city’s first public sculpture honouring a local historical figure. Its presence reflected efforts to shape collective memory, honour regional heroes, and secularise public spaces during La Reforma.
In 1895, the statue moved to Guelatao, prompting debate about its rightful place and meaning. A new Juárez sculpture later appeared in southern Oaxaca City, while this original work continued to embody those arguments. Look closely at the pedestal, because its design gives the monument a second voice alongside the bronze figure.
