Antonio de León
Antonio de León is the Alameda de León, a central plaza in Oaxaca City beside Plaza de Armas. Tree-lined paths, garden spaces, and an octagonal kiosk shape its open centre. Nearby, the city post office and Catedral a la Virgen de la Asunción frame the square. The cathedral displays rich baroque architecture in its stonework.
Before becoming a garden, the space was called Plazoleta de Cántaros, where artisans sold their products. Don Antonio de León lived in front of the square. He suggested transforming it with his secretary, Benito Juárez, and the garden was inaugurated on 13 October 1843. The plaza honours a former governor and military officer who participated in Mexico’s independence struggle. Later remodelling gave the setting a more urban appearance.
Fountains add another focal point, including a quarry fountain standing before the cathedral. Community gatherings and events have long brought people here. That changing use traces a path from an artisan marketplace to a garden and social meeting place.
