Treffpunkt Führungen - Felsengänge Nürnberg takes you beneath Nuremberg into sandstone tunnels and cellars shaped during the Middle Ages. Several levels form a labyrinth covering more than 20,000 square metres beneath the city.
A medieval ordinance required every brewer to keep a private cellar for storing and fermenting beer. By the late fourteenth century, Nuremberg had more than forty breweries, giving these underground spaces a practical role in the city’s brewing life. During World War II, residents also used the tunnels for shelter during air raids. Guided tours explore this history in German or English, while themed walks connect the cellars with Nuremberg’s old town.
Children’s tours add a treasure hunt, and concerts and art exhibitions use the atmosphere underground. Nearby, Hausbrauerei Altstadthof still ages specialty beers in parts of the cellars, including traditional Nuremberg red beer.
